Overview The Lodi wine producing area experiences hot sunny days in the growing season but has significantly cooler nights than the majority of the central valley due to the fog that blows in from the Sacramento River delta. The fog makes it far more suitable for growing quality wine grapes than virtually any other areas in the valley.
If there is a single Varietal that is thought of as the traditional Lodi wine, it has to be Zinfandel. There are thousands of acres of Zinfandel, arguably the Varietal that first brought Lodi wine its notoriety and their are still hundreds of acres of old vine "Zin". In addition to Zinfandel, Lodi wineries produce Varietals from the French Bordeaux and Rhone regions as well as Italy, Spain and Portugal, but Zinfandel is still the darling of the Lodi wine region. Lodi has close to 100 wineries and at least that many wine growers. Lodi wines are often less expensive than their coastal counterparts. Land in Lodi is significantly cheaper than in coastal areas and often, the land has already been in the family for generations. If a winery is not building part of a mortgage payment into the cost of every bottle, very good wine becomes much more affordable.
Accommodations and Dining If you want to experience Lodi wines, not surprisingly the best place to stay is the town of Lodi although the towns of Elk Grove, Clements, Lockford as well as Stockton to the south also have lodging. Several Lodi wineries offer accommodations as well.
Getting There The Lodi wine region is unusually easy to reach. Unlike most wine regions that sit in valleys or on mountains with a limited amount of roads, Lodi wineries can all be reached from either north or south from Highway 5 or Highway 99. Highway 12 from the North Bay Area goes directly there as well and if you are coming from the mountains, Highway 88 dead ends just south.
