Do you think you know what Terroir is?
Terroir is a french terms used describe the unique characteristics that a vineyard or even a particular spot within a vineyard can impart to a wine. Climate, soil type, slope of a vineyard, sun exposure, even ground water level can all influence the flavor that a unique terroir can impart to the vines.
Terroir is often overused to describe wine however, because not enough people understand how to distinguish the hand of the wine maker from the characteristics of the vineyard. In order to truly taste terroir, the wine almost always has to be a single vineyard designate wine with at most, a small amount of blending grapes. If you are buying a large production wine, odds are you are not tasting terroir…just the winemaker’s style.

Do you think you know what a Meritage wine is?
A Meritage is a blend of two or more Varietals that is the Californian equivalent of a French Bordeaux blend. Bordeaux is a trademarked name and can’t be used to describe wine from outside of that region so a number of California winemakers got together to create a synonymous term. Only wine makers that have paid their dues and have been approved can use the term Meritage. It can only contain Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Merlot, Malbec, Petite Verdot or Carmenere with no Varietal making up more than 90% of the blend. A white Meritage can also be produced but is rarely seen.

Have you ever spent the night at a Winery (intentionally, not because you passed out under the tasting bar)?
Yes – Staying at a Winery Bed and Breakfast or Lodge is great!
No – I’m more of a “Drink and Leave” kind of person.
A number of you have indulged in one of the great experiences if you really like wine but it’s still a significant minority. There are hundreds of Wineries that now offer lodging at their facilities. If you want to find a few, click here and go to our sortable database where you can quickly find just those members who have on site lodging.

Survey Question, week of June 2nd, 2013
Do you usually try to pair food and wine?
Yes – I like the way certain types of wine and food compliment each other.
No – When enjoying a glass of wine, I’ll eat anything, even road kill!
Well, that was interesting. Although we only provided two possible answers, some one actually did a write in vote and chose both (yes Dawn, we know who you are). The results were pretty evenly split but disturbingly, there are a number of you who actually favor wine and roadkill.
Yes – 40%
No – 50%
10%, apparently, they have wine for dinner, not with it, so pairing is meaningless.
Great write in comments from some of you this week!

Survey question, week of May 12th, 2013
How many bottles of wine do you currently have in your house?
0 You poor, sad person.
1 to 10 Come on…that’s barely enough for a party if a few friends show up

51 to 250 Now we’re talking!
251 or above Can I move in?
By the way, when we are talking about bottles, we mean real ones that you would drink or actually share with a friend…not those dust covered bottles of swill that someone gave you as a gift that are sitting in a dark corner with a chewed up dog toy and last year’s dirty sock.
Thanks to those of you who answered. It appears that the vast majority of you either don’t buy enough wine or have absolutely no self control when you do, and drink it all right away. Thankfully, there wasn’t any one who had zero bottles of wine.
