Some grapes can theoretically trace their origins back thousands of years.
Early Greek settlers brought
Anglianico to Italy, but the grape gained notoriety as an Italian varietal from Southwestern Italy. Some grape varieties
do not easily fit into one country as an originator however.
Modern political boundaries meant nothing when
the wine industry already had thousands of years of history. Modern France and Spain, did not begin to take shape in their
present form until 500 years ago and as a consequence still share many wine varietals.
A number of grapes trace
their origins back to northeastern Spain and southeastern France when that area was comprised of independent kingdoms or duchies
and the cultivated varietals bridged both countries as the current borders began to settle. |
