At a glance…

Sub AVAs:  2
Location:  The Southern Oregon AVA is located in the southwestern part of the state and includes the drainages of the Rogue River and the Umpqua River.  It's northern boundary almost touches the Willamette River AVA.  It is actually made up of two sub AVAs, the Rogue Valley and Umpqua Valley AVAs and is connected by a small mountainous strip of land.
Climate:  Although heavily influenced by the cool Pacific Ocean, the eastern portion of the AVA does experience warmer temperatures than other coast regions of Oregon and Washington and is capable of growing warmer weather vines like most of the California AVAs.
Comments:
Full disclosure...I usually don't express opinions in our main site (I leave that to our blog section), but I disagree with AVA designations like the Southern Oregon AVA.  It was created to allow more marketing power for the wineries of the pre-existing Rogue Valley and Umpqua Valley AVAs.  Much of it doesn't seem to meet the typical criteria that is needed to create an unique AVA.  If you wish to see what the TTB (the branch of the US government that regulates AVA designations), we've provided a link.
