In 1964 Uriel Nielson established Santa Barbaraâ??s first commercial vineyard on what is now the Byron estate. Prior to Nielson, the county had been considered too cold and too windy for grapes. Fortunately Uriel didnâ??t listen. In retrospect he had vision.
In the 1980's Santa Barbara gathered fame as a cluster of serious vintners started producing Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays that were praised for their character, depth and honesty. Among the group was Ken Brown who established his Byron Winery on the site of the original, historic Nielsen Vineyard. Brownâ??s innovative gravity-feed winemaking facility and intensive viticultural experiments helped revolutionize cold-climate grape growing in California.
Today, Byron is focused on single vineyard and regional bottlings of Pinot Noirs and Chardonnays from the best benchland sites throughout Santa Barbara County. |
Anytime we talk about Byron â?? the wines, land or vineyard â?? we often refer to â??the bench.â? Bench is a geographical term meaning the shoulder of a mountain. Itâ??s that part of the hillside where the steep incline begins its rise in our case roughly 500 - 800 feet above sea level. The bench contributes largely to the style, texture, aromatics, flavors and intensity of our wines. The unique mineral content and drainage capabilities of bench soil separate it from plots on the valley floor. The soil is an alluvial fan of dirt and minerals, with excellent drainage leading to healthy, happy vines.
