Tempranillo is certainly one of the up and comers in the US wine world but it's been in Spain as long as any one can remember and is the key wine grape in its two most famous blends, Rioja and Ribero del Duero. Tempranillo is also one of the most common blending grapes in Port in several regions of Portugal where it goes by the name of Tinta Roriz.
Tempranillo is another one of the Varietals whose origins are shrouded in antiquity. No facts are known but the most commonly hypothesis is that it shares an early ancestor with Pinot Noir. However, until Genetic mapping provides concrete facts as to its origins, we'll have to make do with unproven speculation. While its history is unknown, its progress to the US is well documented with plantings in the US started in California over 100 years ago. It's only recently that Tempranillo has started to gain notoriety as a Varietal worthy of attention in the US instead of just a blending grape
Tempranillo fruit is quite dark in color, which can lead to some misconceptions about its structure. Tempranillo is a medium bodied wine with more in common with Pinot Noir rather than other dark skinned grapes like Syrah. Aging in oak compliments its spicy character particularly well. It is one of the Varietals that benefits from the stronger Vanilla flavors imparted by American Oak.
Tempranillo's growing season is relatively short. It buds late and ripens early ' hence its name, a derivative from the Spanish word Temprano meaning early. It's a relatively easy Varietal to get average to above average fruit but to get exceptional fruit; it needs warmth in the day but cooler evenings to create the acidity needed for an exceptional wine.
Most wine experts agree that as Americans expand their horizons and venture out from the traditional 'safe' French Varietals, interest in Tempranillo will increase.
