Details

Souzao also spelled (Sousao) originated in the Minho region of Portugal but has fallen out of favor at home.  Its origins in California are unknown but as of 2005, there were less than 100 acres of this Portugal wine grown in the state.

Souzao is a vigorous grower so pruning is necessary.  It produces black grapes and unusually, the wine color comes from both the juice and the skins.

Souzao is deep red/purple in color.  When grown in hot areas, it has a tendency to get raisiny or jammy much like Zinfandel but even darker.  It's usually blended into Port to impart deep rich color more than taste.  It's not an age worthy wine.  Typically anything past 5 years is past its prime.  Serve Souzao just under room temperature because it has a rather aggressive flavor.

At least one Monterey Winery and one Sonoma Valley Winery grow Souzao.
